I have it, and it is great
Get yourself an SLR.
Digital is the most common one nowadays but plenty of grassroots photographers still use film.
I personally use a canon 50D and couldnt be happier. there are plenty of reviews and comparisons online u can check out. i think one i used to make my final decision was dpreview.com very informative and has lots of resources and detailed reviews.
you will also need to consider a lens. a camera is only half the story. read up on dpreview as different lenses have different “purposes” and think about what you want to achieve with your photos. I’d reccomend just an all around lens to get your feet wet and then you can purchase more to further satisfy your needs
its hard to recommend a full kit to you (since i dont know you!) but do some reading, go to a local (smaller is ideal, big box stores beware) and chat with them about it. if they are passionate about their store they will have no problem going everything over with you.
hope this helps!
Depends on your budget to start out with. If you want a good digital camera like a Nikon D40 and up or a Canon Rebel and up. Start by checking out their websites and see which camera you would like to buy. Once you have the camera of your choice, go to Best Buy or any camera shop and play with the camera. Ask questions and play with the different features they have.
You should have a pretty good idea after doing some research and playing with the different cameras. I have a Nikon D60 and I love it. My sister in law has a Canon Rebel and she loves it.
To get started once you have bought your camera, check out all the stock websites where people can buy your photos. I love this place called Red Bubble. You can sell your work and become part of groups. This site is so much fun!
I hope this helps. Good luck and Happy shopping =)
Nat Geo… good shoot for in life.
I for one have been rejected 3 times when offering them images that were picked up by others soon after..
The photographers I have talked with that have had images IN it are the best photographers out and about. They SEE and are willing to keep making images till THE one image hits the film.
None of them have a degree in photography that I know . One has his in poli sci… All use Leica cameras that I have met.
So advice, be a great student. You will need to be able to learn all of your life to make images like you wish to. Take images, a lot of them. Learn how to talk to anyone and I do mean anyone from the top to the bottom of life. You will need to do that too.. I have.
Before deciding on what camera you want you should really decide what sort of photography you want to do first. Once you know what you want to do, the camera you want to buy starts to fall into place.
As for tips, take as many photos as you can and never ever give up.

Try Canon D40 SLR. I really like that camera.
